Batteries & Chargers
The John W. Hock Company carries three types of batteries which have different chemistries (lead-acid, non-rechargeable alkaline, and lithium-ion).
- Gel-cell lead-acid batteries come with outputs of 6 or 12 VDC and have various sizes depending on the capacity in AmpHrs. All of our chargers are automatic meaning they taper the charge as the battery becomes charged so as to not dry the battery out or overheat it. We have a various types of chargers for these batteries including a solar charger that can be used with 6 and 12 VDC batteries simply by flipping a switch. One of the 12 volt chargers (PN 2.70) outputs 5 Amp/Hr and accepts as input either 110 or 220 AC, 50/60Hz so it can be used in virtually any country in the world.
- Single-use (i.e. non-rechargeable) alkaline batteries in sizes D-cell, AA-cell, and 9-volt. We have trap-mounted D-cell holders and a waterproof battery holder that has four D-cells in series; both of these holders output 6 VDC.
- Lithium-ion batteries and holder. The holder contains four 18650 protected Li-ion batteries and outputs 7 AmpHrs at 7.4 VDC. The ratio of weight to AmpHrs of these batteries is outstanding. Currently, the only trap using Li-ion batteries is the new Stealth Trap, PN 2014 which can accept any voltage between 4 and 24 volts.
The 6 Volt Rechargeable Batteries are sealed gelled-electrolyte batteries available in different capacities for use with our 6 volt products.
The 12 Volt Rechargeable Batteries are sealed gelled-electrolyte batteries available in different capacities for use with our 12 volt products.
For those who desire the convenience of disposable batteries, you can use the D Cell Battery Holder available in two styles. The 4 D-cells can be used with all of our 6 volt traps and provides enough capacity for 1 or 2 night’s operations, depending on trap and battery type.
The Lithium-Ion 18650 Protected Batteries, Set of Four, Model 2.10. Our batteries are manufactured in Japan and include a built-in protector designed by Seiko. The protector circuit prevents over discharge (activated at 2.45 VDC), over charge (activated at 4.92 VDC), and limits maximum to 10 Amps, far more than required by the Stealth Trap, Model 2014. The chemistry is the latest design using Li-ion hybrid technology. This comes in a set of four batteries held in the Li-ion battery case (PN: 1.40) and requires a Li-ion battery charger like our Model 2.00; the charger outputs 3.4 Amps per hour at 8.4 VDC.

We have specific chargers that work well with 6 or 12 volt gelled-electrolyte batteries. For extended field applications, our solar powered battery charger can replenish the power used the previous night.
The 6 Volt Battery Chargers are fully regulated and can automatically charge our 6 volt gelled-electrolyte batteries or other lead-acid batteries. Chargers are available in both 120 VAC and 220 VAC models.
The 12 Volt Battery Chargers are fully regulated and can automatically charge our 12 volt gelled-electrolyte batteries or other lead-acid batteries. Chargers are available in both 120 VAC and 220 VAC models.
Select from 6 or 12 VDC units depending upon the voltage and amperage requirements of your traps. Solar Charger Model SA is for 6 volt traps; it is capable of replenishing the power used the previous night (ca. 2.0 Amps), during the following day. The Solar Charger Model CD is for 12 volt traps and can recharge a single battery which has been used to power a blacklight trap for 10 or more hours (ca. 5 Amps). Both units come complete with power cords, stands, and instructions. Both are protected from reverse-polarity connection. Model 2.60 Manual. We also have a 30-watt solar charger that can be switched in the field to accommodate 6 and 12 VDC batteries (PN: 2.55).
The 8.4 Volt Battery Charger (PN 2.00) is fully regulated and can automatically charge our 8.4 VDC lithium-ion battery holder (PN 1.40) with a set of four Li-ion batteries (18650, PN 2.10); the input voltage is 110-220 VAC, 50/60 Hz so it can be operated in virtually every country of the world. This charger has a two-speed cooling fan and three LEDs to indicate power on/off, bulk charging, tapering charging, and fully charged. The output plug is designed to plug directly into the battery input plug on the new Stealth Trap (PN 2014). Model 2.00 and Model 1.40 Manual.
NOTE: The Improved Aerosol Droplet Sampler (Model 212), the Modified CDC Backpack Aspirator (Model 1412), and the Improved Prokopack Aspirator (Model 1419) units come supplied with an appropriately-sized battery and charger. See product descriptions and instructions sheets for details.
