CDC UpDraft Blacklight (UV) Trap

The CDC UpDraft Blacklight (UV) Trap Model 1312.06 and 1312.12 were developed from a design of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. In field tests in Central America it caught several times more Anopheline mosquitoes than did standard CDC Miniature or New Jersey light traps.

Design Characteristics

The CDC UpDraft Blacklight (UV) Trap Model 1312 was developed from a design of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The trap includes a blacklight tube support and ballast which runs at either 6 volts (13.1.06) or 12 volts (1312.12) DC. In field tests in Central America it caught several times more Anopheline mosquitoes than did standard CDC Miniature or New Jersey light traps.

BlackLight (UV)

The utility of blacklight (UVA) in attracting a greater number and diversity of mosquito species, Culicoides, and Phlebotomines is well known. Our UV traps employ a 4-watt blue-blacklight tube and a very efficient transistorized inverter-ballast to provide radiation in the near-UV range (ca. 320-420 nm). The special inverter ballast is able to start the 4-wt blue blacklight tube at battery voltages 2-3 volts lower than nominal battery voltages.  The blacklight system is the same as the the one used in the CDC Fay-Prince Model 812 and Downdraft Blacklight (UV) Model 912 traps.

Included Items

The CDC UpDraft Blacklight (UV) Trap Model 1312 includes:

  • Trap Assembly with motor and fan.
  • BlackLight UV 4-watt tube, socket, and internal ballast.
  • Power Cable.
  • Double-Ring Collection Bag and Rain Shield.
  • Instructions.

Requirements

  • The 6- and 12-volt versions draw 0.5 and 0.6 Amps/hour at 6 and 12 volts, respectively.
  • The two versions of the trap require a 6 or 12 volt, respectively.  Our 12 amp hour battery is sufficient for run times of ca. 15 hours. See the batteries and chargers product page for options.
